If magnesium is the only thing you take, timing barely matters. Take it whenever you'll actually remember. The moment it gets complicated is when your bathroom shelf grows — vitamin D, a zinc capsule, calcium, an iron pill your doctor put you on, a multivitamin, maybe a thyroid tablet. It's a fair question, and the honest answer is it depends on the dose and whether any of it is prescription medication.

- Vitamin D
- Vitamin B6
- Vitamin K2
- Food / a meal (especially for glycinate or citrate, to settle the gut)
Better kept 2+ hours apart (absorption competition or reduced drug effect):
- High-dose zinc
- High-dose calcium
- Iron
- Tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics
- Levothyroxine (thyroid medication) — space this one further, about 4 hours
- Bisphosphonates (osteoporosis drugs like alendronate)

What to Take WITH Magnesium (Helpers That Don't Compete)
The fear of "never mix supplements" is overblown. Plenty of things are perfectly happy sitting next to magnesium in the same glass of water — and a couple genuinely work better together.
Magnesium + Vitamin D (They Actually Need Each Other)
This is the pairing people worry about for no reason. Vitamin D and magnesium don't compete — vitamin D depends on magnesium to do its job.
Every enzyme that metabolizes vitamin D uses magnesium as a cofactor. The liver step that turns vitamin D into 25-hydroxyvitamin D (the number your blood test reports) and the kidney step that converts it into the active hormone both run on magnesium-dependent enzymes (Uwitonze & Razzaque, J Am Osteopath Assoc 2018). Low magnesium can leave vitamin D sitting in a form your body can't fully use.
Practical upshot: taking them together is fine, and if you're supplementing vitamin D it's reasonable to make sure magnesium is in the picture too. Vitamin D is fat-soluble, so pair it with a meal that has some fat — which usually means breakfast or dinner, not an empty-stomach bedtime dose.
Magnesium + Vitamin B6 (An Old Combo — With Modest Evidence)
Walk down any supplement aisle and you'll find magnesium-plus-B6 tablets sold as a set, often for cramps or stress. The rationale is that B6 helps move magnesium into cells and hold it there.
Be honest about the strength here: balance studies suggest only fairly high B6 doses measurably raised red-blood-cell magnesium, while ordinary doses didn't move the needle much (Eisinger & Dagorn, Magnesium 1986 — PubMed 3959594). So it's a sensible, harmless pairing rather than a dramatic one. There's no competition, and if you already own a combined product, no reason to split them. Just don't expect B6 to be a magnesium multiplier.
Magnesium + Food (When "With" Means Your Dinner Plate)
"Take it with" sometimes just means food. Certain forms — glycinate is gentle, but citrate and oxide can loosen your stools — sit better in the gut when there's a meal around them. If magnesium gives you cramping or a laxative effect, moving it to with food is the first thing to try before you switch products.

What to Keep 2+ Hours APART From Magnesium (and Why)
Now the separation list. There are two different reasons something lands here, and they're not equally serious:
- Mineral-on-mineral competition — magnesium and another mineral jockey for the same absorption machinery in the gut. This is mostly a "get a little more out of both" issue, and it only really shows up at higher doses.
- Drug binding — magnesium physically grabs certain medications in the gut and forms a clump the body can't absorb well. This one can blunt a real prescription, so it's the one to take seriously.
One honest caveat before the list: "separate by 2 hours" is a practical convention, not a hard clinical law for every mineral. For the two-mineral pairings below, a couple of hours is more than enough and mostly matters at high doses. For the medications, the spacing is genuinely evidence-based — follow those.
Zinc (High Doses Push Magnesium Out)
Zinc and magnesium share transport pathways, and the interaction actually runs both directions — but the better-documented effect is high-dose zinc depressing magnesium. In controlled balance studies, zinc supplements at 142 mg/day significantly lowered magnesium absorption and balance (Spencer et al., J Am Coll Nutr 1994 — PubMed 7836627), and even a moderately high zinc intake nudged magnesium balance down in postmenopausal women (Nielsen & Milne, Eur J Clin Nutr 2004 — PubMed 15116072).
The catch: those study doses are far above what most people take. A typical 15–25 mg zinc lozenge isn't 142 mg. So at everyday doses this is minor. If you're megadosing zinc (say, during cold season) and taking magnesium, put a couple of hours between them. At normal doses, don't lose sleep over it.
Calcium (Dose-Dependent — Not "Never")
Calcium is the one wrapped in the most myth, so let's be precise. At ordinary supplement doses, magnesium and calcium coexist fine. When researchers gave a large magnesium dose (826 mg) alongside normal calcium intakes, it did not meaningfully change calcium absorption (Spencer et al., J Am Coll Nutr 1994 — PubMed 7836628). That's exactly why so many combination products cheerfully pack calcium and magnesium into the same pill.
The competition only becomes worth managing at high simultaneous doses — think a big calcium supplement (500 mg-plus) taken at the exact same time as a big magnesium dose, especially with phosphate around, which can form poorly-absorbed complexes. If your calcium is that high, splitting them across the day is a reasonable optimization. If it's not, "you can never take calcium and magnesium together" is simply wrong (more in the myth section below).
Iron (Separate to Protect Both)
Iron and magnesium are both divalent minerals fighting over overlapping gut transporters, so co-dosing can trim absorption on both sides. Standard advice is to separate oral iron from magnesium by at least two hours. There's even a documented case of heavy magnesium (laxative) use driving iron-deficiency anemia by blocking iron absorption (Sugimoto & Yamada, Biopsychosoc Med 2019 — case report, PMC6668159).
Iron is fussy anyway — it absorbs best on a relatively empty stomach, often with vitamin C, and away from calcium. So iron usually ends up on its own schedule regardless. Keep it clear of your magnesium dose and you've handled it.
Certain Medications — This Is the Important One
Everything above is optimization. This part is different, because getting it wrong can quietly weaken a medication you're relying on. Magnesium binds several oral drugs in the gut and drops how much reaches your bloodstream. Per the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (Magnesium — Health Professional Fact Sheet):
- Tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics (doxycycline, ciprofloxacin, and relatives) — magnesium forms insoluble complexes with these, so the antibiotic should be taken at least 2 hours before, or 4–6 hours after, a magnesium supplement.
- Bisphosphonates (osteoporosis drugs such as alendronate) — take the magnesium-containing product at least 2 hours apart from the bisphosphonate to avoid reduced absorption.
- Levothyroxine (thyroid hormone) — minerals interfere with its uptake, and this one wants a wider gap of about 4 hours. Calcium and iron do the same thing to levothyroxine, so if you take any of them, keep the thyroid pill on its own clean morning window (Wiesner et al., systematic review, Pharmaceuticals 2021 — PMC8002057).
Notice the timing isn't uniform. The general mineral rule of thumb is "2+ hours," but levothyroxine specifically wants more room. When a medication is involved, follow the drug's spacing — not the generic mineral one. And loop in your pharmacist, since your exact prescriptions may add wrinkles this list doesn't cover.

Two things worth calling out from the table. First, the bedtime magnesium slot is doing a lot of work here — it's a common choice because the calming effect suits night and it ends up naturally separated from the morning meds. Myth Check — 3 Things People Get Wrong About Magnesium Timing
A few claims get repeated so often they've hardened into "facts." Here's where each one actually stands.
"Calcium and magnesium can NEVER be taken together"
Mostly false. At normal supplement doses they get along fine — a large magnesium dose didn't meaningfully dent calcium absorption in controlled testing (PubMed 7836628), which is why combined Cal-Mag products exist and sell by the truckload. The competition only becomes worth managing when both doses are high and taken at the same moment. "Never" is the wrong word; "space out the big doses" is the right one.
"More magnesium is always better — you can't overdo a pill"
False. Food magnesium is self-limiting because your kidneys clear the excess. Supplements are a different story: the Institute of Medicine set a Tolerable Upper Intake Level of 350 mg/day for magnesium from supplements and medications (that ceiling doesn't count magnesium in food), and going over it commonly brings diarrhea and cramping (the 350 mg supplemental UL and its origin — Adv Nutr 2023, PMC10509448; see also the NIH ODS fact sheet). Some researchers argue that ceiling is overly cautious, but the practical point stands — more is not automatically better, and different forms differ a lot in how much loosens your gut. "If magnesium keeps me awake, I'm taking it with the wrong thing"
Partly a misread. When magnesium seems to cause wakefulness, the culprit is usually the form, the dose, the timing, or just individual quirk — not what you paired it with. When to Talk to a Doctor (Drug Interactions & Kidney Warning)
Most of this article is about squeezing out a bit more absorption. These situations are a step up — check with a professional before you add or increase magnesium:
- You take a prescription in the interaction list — antibiotics (tetracyclines/quinolones), levothyroxine, bisphosphonates, and also some diuretics and other drugs. A pharmacist can tell you the exact spacing for your meds (NIH ODS — medication interactions).
- You have kidney disease or reduced kidney function. Your kidneys are what clear excess magnesium, and when they're impaired it can build up to dangerous levels. This is a genuine "ask first" situation, per the NIH ODS fact sheet.
- You notice signs of too much — persistent diarrhea, unusual muscle weakness, an irregular or slow heartbeat, flushing, or low blood pressure. Stop and get checked.
